Smart Logistics Datathon 2024

The Smart Logistics Datathon 2024 (“the Datathon”), organised by the Asian Institute of Supply Chains & Logistics (AISCL) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), took place successfully at Hong Kong Cyberport on 1st to 4th April. To provide the younger generation with early exposure to logistics-related entrepreneurship and innovation, and to cultivate their interest in modern logistics, the Datathon aims to inspire participants to develop innovative applications and solutions related to smart logistics using big data analytics. It supports the Hong Kong government’s strategy of promoting digitalisation and the development of smart logistics, and of rebranding the modern logistics industry as "Smart, Innovative, High-end" under the "Action Plan on Modern Logistics Development" promulgated in October 2023. The Datathon is financially supported by the newly launched Logistics Promotion Funding Scheme, part of the Hong Kong government’s Maritime and Aviation Training Fund.

This year, 20 teams from 20 different top universities in Asia, including from Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia, mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, were selected as the finalists among over 50 teams who entered. In addition, AISCL extended the Datathon’s reach to local secondary schools for the first time, selecting 10 teams to form a Secondary School League. A total of 82 students successfully completed the Datathon.

Before the 35-hour non-stop competition, participants were provided with training workshops on data analytics tools sponsored by Amazon Web Services Hong Kong (AWS), as well as site visits to a range of large-scale logistics infrastructure around Hong Kong International Airport and talks from logistics industry leaders. These activities further promoted Hong Kong’s status as an international logistics hub and brought out the potential of the city’s modern logistics industry.

For the winners list and highlights of the event, please refer to the Datathon website.

Hong Kong ICT Awards 2019 - Smart Mobility Grand Award

The "IoT-Augmented Airfield Service System (AS2)", a joint project between Center of Cyber Logistics, Airport Authority Hong Kong and ubiZense, has won the Smart Mobility Grand Award in the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2019.  It proposes the development of an airfield service system to actively deliver a view of the overall real-time apron operation status to relevant stakeholders such as ramp handling operators, airlines and airfield services. Their synergised cooperation can ensure attainment of the BAP key performance index to alleviate potential flight delays and, importantly, passenger dissatisfaction with unnecessarily long baggage-waiting times. IoT-augmented analytics services are accordingly made available to keep stakeholders informed of the current status and alert them to incidents or potential problem areas.  Analytics services can be descriptive, presenting a personalised view of resource utilisation at a given point of interest or service, or predictive, providing a best effort to look ahead in a specific operational area, such as resource assignment, and offer a scenario forecast for consideration of the best next action.
